A Provenance. Objects

A Provenance is my current work utilising cowrie shells, a devalued currency, a symbol of pre-colonial civilizations, and an abiding tool of spiritual practitioners worldwide. Here, everyday objects mark time and memory while the cowrie embellishments are the fingerprints of the people who have held and used them. The collection is a growing account of the stories of Indigenous people, particularly those of the African Diaspora that are held away from light, in archives & museums. As we unearth documentation and recall oral histories, these new artefacts perceive those forgotten or excluded. The unnamed actors in these repositories deserve citations that acknowledge their voices in the past and their contributions to contemporary society. My practice creates a data visualisation that exercises the ocular nerves and tactile senses to heal the memory loss caused by colonisation.
